Mrs. Hamlett

Welcome, Sumner Danbury Families!

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year!  The Sumner Danbury staff and I are eager to begin another exciting year of growing and learning together. This year, we are looking forward to finishing the major construction that began last year. Our teachers are settled in to the new classrooms and we are expecting our new, inclusive playground to be completed by the time school begins. Construction on the ramp leading to the main office will be taking place during September, then the end of construction is in sight.

As with all Claremont elementary schools, we are beginning our third year with the core ELA program Wonders. Our teachers continue to learn and use this program as the basis for our reading, writing, and language instruction to teach the California ELA standards, as well as the California English Language Development (ELD) standards for English language learners. Our teachers will continue to use Thinking Maps and will further their training this year in Write From the Beginning and Beyond to support student writing. In the area of mathematics, our teachers will be trained in iReady Mathematics, a digital program which provides additional intervention, practice, and acceleration at each student's individual instructional level.

This year many of our teachers of students with special needs will continue their training and professional development in ULS (Unique Learning Systems)  and  SANDI (Student Annual Needs Determination Inventory) assessments. As a site, we will continue, with the guidance of our amazing Speech Therapy team, to instruct and support our students in the Communication Bill of Rights as they learn to communicate through various modes and devices.

Last year we applied for and received an Innovation Grant from the Claremont Education Foundation to set up our own video studio and produce a student newscast. We are excited to fully implement this program this year as we begin to develop our STEAM Lab (Science Technology Engineering Arts Math). Our wonderful PFA has contributed a class set of Sphero robots for use in our new STEAM Lab as well!

We are also excited to move into our 3rd year of our positive behavior program after being recognized as a Silver Level PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) school. We saw many improvements last year as we worked to consistently acknowledge our students for "Being Kind, Responsible, and the Best They Can Be"  in class and around campus. Our staff is known for their positive relationships with students and are committed this year to building their understanding of social emotional learning.

Last year our site again earned recognition as a Certified AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) Elementary  school. You'll see this evidenced in our staff's use of research-based instructional strategies and expectations of student organization - all in an effort to help our students on the path to college/career readiness.

Once again, it is a privilege to be working in partnership with the faculty, staff, and families of Sumner Danbury. Without such care and commitment, we would not be the truly special place we are. I look forward to meeting each of you through the course of the year! Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns at (909) 398-0320 or bhamlett@cusd.claremont.edu. Together we will continue to make Sumner Danbury “the best it can be!”

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hamlett
